Australian Teen Faces Charges for Allegedly Placing Googly Eyes on ‘Cast in Blue’ Sculpture
A teenager from Australia has faced legal proceedings after reportedly vandalizing a sizable blue sculpture of a legendary being by affixing googly eyes to it.
The 19-year-old, 19 years old, participated remotely at the local court in South Australia on that day, facing with a single charge of property damage.
Officials commented at the time of the September incident, the local council said that surveillance video showed a individual placing fake eyes on the sculpture, which residents have nicknamed the “Blue Blob”.
Ms Vanderhorst made no plea and informed the judge she was unwell, according to media sources, with the judge advising her to secure a legal representative before her next court date in December.
The following day the reported event, the local mayor stated that repairs to the much-loved public artwork would be costly as the stickers could not be detached without harming the sculpture.
“This wilful damage to a cherished public artwork is inappropriate and disrespectful,” Mayor Lynette Martin said in September. “It is not innocent amusement, it is pricey - it is also disappointing to those members of our society who have embraced the Blue Blob.”
She said the council would seek the “significant” repair costs from those accountable for the damage.
At the time the sculpture was initially suggested, it received varied responses from the local community due to its price tag and design.
Costing 136,000 Australian dollars ($89,000; £68,000), the sculpture depicts a mythical megafauna, with the creators inspired by an prehistoric marsupial ant-eater found in nearby caverns that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.
