California's Governor States He Is Weighing a Presidential Campaign for 2028

Gavin Newsom, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he will decide on whether to run for president in 2028 once the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.

"Yeah, I couldn't be truthful otherwise," the governor stated when pressed about contemplating a presidential run following the 2026 elections. "That wouldn't be honest. And I won't do that."

Newsom's tenure as California's leader concludes in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he cautioned that any choice is still years away.

"The future will decide," he remarked.

Growing Prominence as a Political Adversary

The California governor has come to the forefront as a prominent critic of the current federal leadership, employing his online platforms and championing a ballot measure that would expand the party's House seats in following GOP gerrymandering. This action has drawn criticism from political opponents.

Clash on Transportation

Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor is indifferent about Californians in a Sunday segment on Fox News. The secretary announced intentions to cut taxpayer dollars from the state and threatened revoking the power to grant trucking licenses.

"I plan to withdraw $160m from California," he declared, after a recent fatal crash in California involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that caused three deaths and four injuries.

The governor's team highlighted that the federal government had approved the worker's status on several occasions, which enabled him to receive a trucking license under U.S. law.

The transportation secretary had before announced he was blocking additional funds from California for ignoring language proficiency rules for truck drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Governor's Office

"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, continues to misunderstand federal law," Newsom's office said in a previous comment addressing the funding warnings. "Meanwhile, in contrast to this person, we rely on data: The state's truck drivers had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the sole state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Facts don't lie. The Trump administration does."

Voter Sentiment and Political Future

A recent survey revealed that 72% of Democrats and 48% of all registered voters indicated that Newsom must consider running for president in 2028. In recent years, Newsom's favorability has grown to an typical level of 33.5% from around 30%, while his negative ratings has decreased from an average of previous highs to 38.4%.

In previous months, the governor stated while traveling several key regions that he had "uncertainty" about his intentions for the next presidential election.

He noted his personal struggles, including being identified as dyslexic at the age of five.

"The thought that a individual who scored 960 on the SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was typically not at the front – that such a possibility is discussed is, in and of itself, remarkable," he commented. "Who the hell knows? I am eager to see who steps forward in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that's the question for the voters."
