New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
New York police released surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims according to reports.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday near the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.
Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become an important component of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on early August and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
