Pedro Neto Scores Treble as The Blues Deliver Liam Rosenior with Joyous Return to Hull
Amid freezing rain, snow, and a biting wind off the waters of the Humber Estuary, combined with a resolute Hull City side pushing hard for a top-flight place, this presented all the makings of a difficult night's task for the visitors.
"We could have scored more but Hull are a good team and it was a difficult fixture; I am very pleased with the performance," he said. "This club is very special to me so it was nice to get a positive reception from both sets of fans. The application of the players was excellent."
Liam Rosenior holds this place dear to him, given some of his relatives hail from Hull and his successful spell in management of the Championship club. His positive connection was extended with a commanding performance from his squad, who ultimately sauntered into the next round of the FA Cup.
Clinical Edge Secures Comprehensive Victory
Seventy-two hours after surrendering a two-goal lead in the league, there was a hint of fragility about Chelsea going into this potentially tricky tie. The capacity Hull crowd evidently felt it too, but Rosenior's men navigated the task perfectly.
Rosenior made alterations, enacting seven of them to his XI. The match might and maybe should have been settled earlier than it actually was, with two the Brazilian winger and Liam Delap at fault for missing glorious chances to put their side in front in the first half.
But, luckily for the away team, Pedro Neto was in a far more ruthless frame of mind. He broke the scoring with a marvellous long-range effort, which proved to be the spark for his team to take control of the match. By full time, they had four, with Neto netting three of them for a brilliant three-goal haul.
The Forward's Redemption and Impact
Hull showed great fight all game, but the clearer chances consistently fell to the visitors. The winger ought to have broken the scoring when he rounded goalkeeper the Hull stopper before unbelievably shooting over. Delap then had a comparable nightmare incident in front of goal against his old team.
He blocked a Phillips's kick which came back from the crossbar, and Delap started to celebrate thinking the ball had crossed the line. It had not, and by the time he understood, Hull's defenders had reacted to clear the danger.
Delap had his head in his hands after that miss, but he was immensely influential from there on out, registering three key passes. The first was for the first goal as his through ball set up Neto to score from range. Shortly after the second half began, it was two as the forward's set-piece went directly in under the keeper's legs.
Tie Put Beyond Doubt and Focus Shifts
Soon after the second goal, the tie was effectively ended as a dazzling run from Delap teed up Estêvão to tap into an empty net. Neto then finished his hat-trick as the provider again delivered the decisive pass for the striker to calmly slot by a stranded goalkeeper.
By that stage, the work Hull had done in the first thirty minutes had long since forgotten. Their priority must now switch back to achieving a promotion to the top division under Sergej Jakirovic, who rested a number of first-choice players with that goal in mind.
"In my opinion we deserved at least one goal but if we play like this we will be in a strong situation in the Championship," the Hull manager commented. "Never surrender, maybe in the next games this can be a positive example of how we must play."
There was great effort to the end, and they almost got a consolation when Lewis Koumas struck a post in injury time. But this was the Blues' evening, and another encouraging step forward for their new head coach at a place he is familiar with intimately.
FA Cup History Look Promising
The result resulted in an ultimately straightforward night's work, and the FA Cup-shaped signs are positive from here for the winners. They have faced Hull on three other occasions in this tournament in the last decade and on each occasion, they have progressed to reach the showpiece. Much remains to be work in that respect, but this was another significant tick for Rosenior.
