The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... At the Moment.

Vince Gilligan never anticipated that Pluribus would emerge as a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

As the debut season of the hit series wrapping up—and a second season already in development—the writers' room opened up about the fan response and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.

About the Overwhelming Viewer Reception

It would be easy to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. The creator is striving to avoid both.

“The experience is akin to constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's by design. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”

Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by what people are saying.”

“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.

The Central Mystery: Will Vince Gilligan See the Ending of Pluribus?

Considering the writers aren't taking cues by public opinion, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… with some caveats.

“We've developed some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to abandon a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”

On the other hand, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.

“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Then again, why not reference the legendary finales?

“My dream is Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV.
