The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"This is a unique experience where a girl containing several human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate personas, all possessing their own fears and motivations. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy hospital, while additional clips show the protagonist navigating a desolate chapel.
A World of Individual Dread
"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can trigger something primal within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to each person."
The central gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these identities will change against your will during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become amplified and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by nurses all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms where their necks are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body is rightfully them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, because every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The last one remaining might be a fake. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be follow on platforms.
