Thousands Gather at Initial Israeli Burial Ceremony Since Hostage Bodies Came Back

While Michel Illouz carefully navigated through the masses beneath the tall evergreens and date palms at the cemetery in Ra'anana, a city located about 21 km north of Tel Aviv, he expressed gratitude to numerous participants as possible.

He had extended an invitation to the local community to join his family in mourning his young adult son, Guy, whose remains had been brought back from Gaza on Monday.

Substantial Gathering

Numerous people answered the call. They occupied the avenues, accompanied the funeral vehicle carrying his body, and arrived at the cemetery in such significant numbers that the initial arrangement to conduct the ceremony indoors had to be abandoned.

Instead, the ceremony was conducted in the open air, set to the chorus of avian melodies.

Significant Milestone

This represented the initial burial ceremony since the last 20 living hostages were returned from Gaza, together with multiple remains. A further twenty-one of the dead prisoners continue to be lost, but at the very minimum this loved ones now had a designated location to express sorrow and honor their son, per close acquaintances.

Tragic Story

Guy Illouz, a performer and sound technician, had been targeted in his posterior at the Nova music festival during the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. Prior to the incident, he had called his father from a sheltered spot to express his love; to offer final words. He was taken hostage, and based on those imprisoned alongside him, he eventually succumbed from his trauma due to inadequate care.

Relative's Viewpoint

A trusted companion of the Illouz household, Michelle, aged 50, commented that it had been crucial to them that individuals came today. The Illouz household, comprising Guy's siblings and brother, had practiced the mourning period, the seven-day period of bereavement, after learning of his death in December of the previous year. But now that Guy was at long last back with them, they required "supportive individuals again."

"It warms my heart that you came," said Michel. "Your presence is deeply appreciated."

Parent's Homage

He spoke to his son. "Beloved Guy," he uttered, using a loving expression, "it's hard for me to envision the time to come without you. They took you from me – they ended your life – they kidnapped me and took my sense of self and murdered my soul and feelings."

"I feel empty inside since that senseless shooting by those malicious militants when they seized you and told you to turn around, and then merely shot two needless bullets into your dorsal area."

Last Farewell

"And here I am this morning, heading toward Abu Kabir identification center to verify your remains and bid farewell. They removed the white sheet, and the primary view I observed was that familiar expression, that hopeful nature, that calm demeanor and dignity that so defined you."

"I touched you, tried to smell you, caressed every bone in your body. I observed you, I was in private with you, and yes, I felt with complete conviction that it was you. Yes, I know, Guy-shuk, that you've come back home. You've come back to your family's embrace, to all your friends, and to the numerous individuals whose emotions your narrative impacted."

Family Strength

Throughout the early part of the ceremony, Illouz had concentrated completely on supporting his junior family members. He gently touched the locks of his girls, embraced his boy, showed affection and maintained composure for them. But then his voice broke.

Treasured Recollections

"I'll miss so much exploring alongside you through this nation, sensing your presence, enjoying your artistic creations, resting on elevated terrain and igniting the flame to prepare the beverage the way only you understood – 'Dad, do you see the coffee froth? You have to simmer it carefully, let the lather develop, then boil it again. Stir the coffee with circular motions' – and then your expression while enjoying the drink and your delight in every single drop."

"Before I left Abu Kabir today, I honored my word. I observed you, breathed you in one ultimate occasion, and yes, I planted a kiss on the forehead. I was able to see your beauty even in the situation in which you came back."

Final Words

"My dear son, I love you so much, I cherish you. I will yearn for you every instant and tiny segment of my life. Rest now, my sweet one, rest after a passage of multiple seasons through worlds unknown to us. I hold you dear, my dear Guy, my cherished eldest child."
