UK Sport Chair Details AI Plan to Enhance Great Britain Athletes For Upcoming Podium Wins.
The Olympic and Paralympic squads need to adopt AI and encourage increased collaboration to maintain their current elite results, as stated by the nation's elite sport agency leader Nick Webborn.
"We have been an exceptionally prosperous nation, and to maintain that standing or to even improve further, we're going to have to operate in new ways," he stated.
He emphasized the importance to "think smarter" and "utilize things like AI appropriately in sport," alongside improving partnerships between various governing organizations.
Utilizing Innovation for Performance
Webborn's vision extends further than podium ambitions. He pointed to a number of crucial areas where AI could offer major benefits:
- Talent Identification: Using analytics to identify potential athletes.
- Injury Prevention: Predicting and mitigating injury risks through biomechanical tracking.
- Virtual Assessment: Enabling fair categorization for disabled athletes without extensive journeys.
This follows a recent announcement that British athletes would be given AI-based safeguards from online abuse.
Analyzing Past Games Results
Although Team GB won 65 podium finishes at the 2024 Paris Games, matching their London 2012 total, their first-place tally of 14 saw them drop to seventh in the final table.
"We want to continue punching above our weight," said Webborn. "It's those small details, how we convert those silvers into first places."
Webborn additionally praised the ParalympicsGB squad, which has repeatedly placed runner-up after China, but noting that international rivals are closing the gap.
Competitor Welfare as a Cornerstone
During his initial discussion since taking up the role, Webborn put significant importance on competitor welfare and post-career development.
"Supporting the competitors who enter our elite sports system... preparing for their future, so that the skills they learn make them a better person... remains extremely vital to me," Webborn stated.
He argued that a caring system not only fosters superior performers but also better people for the future.
Future Aspirations and Staging Global Tournaments
Looking ahead, UK Sport is focused on securing major competitions to the UK. Scheduled events feature the 2026 European Athletics Championships and the 2028 football Euros.
Webborn also voiced a future "aspiration" to stage the Summer Games again, possibly around 2040.
"Wasn't that brilliant in 2012? I'd love for other people of the public to experience those moments too," Webborn said.
Webborn proposed that a future bid could be innovative, perhaps featuring multiple host cities such as Liverpool and Manchester co-hosting.
